BREEDERS DIRECTORY and
INFORMATION FOR PURCHASING A
PUPPY
REGISTERED DOGS MUST NOT BE BRED WITH
NON-REGISTERED DOGS
Registered dogs have a
registration number, which is recorded, at the top of the
Certified Registration and Pedigree with the seal of the
Australian National Kennel Club (ANKC). Only registered dogs
are eligible for Exhibition and/or Obedience, Agility Trials
etc. conducted and approved by the Victorian Canine
Association Inc. To compete in Exhibition, etc. the owner
needs to be a financial member of the Victorian Canine
Association Inc.
Each breeders has a registered Kennel
Prefix. No breeder can register a litter of puppies without a
Kennel Prefix.
All puppies must be registered within 18
months of whelping. No dog can be registered after this age.
There are two types of Registration - Main and
Limited. If you wish to exhibit and/or breed your dog at a
later stage, then your puppy must be registered on the Main
Register. Dogs can be transferred from the Limited Register
provided the breeder authorises it in writing.
The
BREEDERS listed below are both financial members of the WHWTC
of Victoria and the Victorian Canine Association Inc. and/or
the State in which they reside.

Ask the breeder can you view his/her dogs, that
way they get to meet you and you can discuss and ask
questions. Some breeders only have the dam (mother) on their
property.
You will need to contact each breeder
direct. Some breeders have a waiting list so your name can be
added, whilst others just tell you when their next litter is
due, and then it's up to you to contact them.
It is
advisable to ring each breeder on a regular basis, as this
shows that you are keen to get a puppy. It is a good idea to
have each of the breeders and phone numbers listed in a book,
so that you can given them a courteous call and let them know
that you have purchased a puppy so that they can remove your
name from their list.
When you know that the breeder
has a puppy available for you, it is advisable to offer a
holding deposit, reserving a puppy. Some breeders don't like
to take deposits until you have viewed the puppies, around 6
weeks after they have received their 1st vaccination.
The majority of breeders allow the purchaser to take
home the puppy once it has reached 8 weeks. No registered
breeder is permitted to allow a puppy to leave their premises
under 8 weeks of age. All registered breeders are bound by
Section 2 - Code of Ethics and Understanding Item 6 -
(Victorian Canine Association Inc.)
The breeder is
required to provide the purchaser with:

Breeders List Application Form
The purchase price of a pure bred westie will vary
from breeder to breeder. Many Westies live long lives. It is not uncommon
for them to live beyond 14 years.
Consider that a lot of time and effort goes into the breeding, whelping and rearing of a litter
and that a crossbreed pup from a pet shop may cost anywhere from $700 to $1,200. Often
these pups are the result of an unplanned breeding, with no quality control on the suitability
of the parents for breeding, no guarantee of what the dog will look like, or what temperament
it will have. It is unlikely that you can view the parents or discover if they were sound
healthy animals.
VCA registered breeders must comply with the Code of Ethics. Most Breeders will offer
some form of health guarantee on the pups they sell. You will receive a certificate of
registration/Pedigree. The pup will be vaccinated and you will receive a certificate to verify
this. The breeder will supply a diet sheet, and possible information on housetraining and tips
on rearing a sound healthy Westie. Westie breeders own Westies. They have a wealth of
information and knowledge of the breed. They should offer you ongoing back up service and
advice.
The Breeders on this list are all members of the West Highland White Terrier Club of
Victoria and as such are bound by the Code of Ethics of the Victorian Canine Association.
The Club does not recommend or endorse these breeders and is in no way responsible for
their actions or the quality of their stock. The onus is on YOU the purchaser, make sure you
ask questions and are content with the conditions of sale before you purchase a pup.
